Program

What is Clean Truck Check?

Clean Truck Check is the California Air Resources Board (CARB) inspection and maintenance program for heavy-duty vehicles. It requires periodic emissions testing of covered diesel and alternative-fuel trucks so that emissions-control systems are kept working and repaired.

Which trucks need Clean Truck Check?

Most diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California are covered, including out-of-state and Mexico-registered trucks that drive in the state. Some exemptions exist. Check your vehicle in CARB’s CTC-VIS system or ask us and we will help you work it out.

How often do trucks need Clean Truck Check?

Most covered trucks currently test twice a year. Under the original rule, OBD-equipped vehicles move to four tests a year starting October 1, 2027, and a bill has proposed reducing testing to once a year. Requirements can change, so always confirm your deadlines in CARB’s CTC-VIS system.

Are you part of CARB?

No. Diesel Dynamix is an independent testing service. CARB runs the Clean Truck Check program; we provide mobile testing so you can meet its requirements. For official rules and deadlines, see CARB’s Clean Truck Check website.

Does Clean Truck Check apply to out-of-state trucks?

Yes. Trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR that are registered in other states or in Mexico are covered when they operate in California. They must be reported in CTC-VIS and keep their testing up to date. We test out-of-state trucks anywhere in Southern California.

How much does Clean Truck Check cost in California?

There are two parts: CARB’s annual compliance fee per vehicle, paid in CTC-VIS, and the tester’s fee for each test. Our price depends on the number of trucks, the test type and the location, with per-truck pricing for fleets. Call or WhatsApp (858) 342-8328 for a quote.

What happens if I miss my Clean Truck Check deadline?

The truck becomes non-compliant. California-registered vehicles can face a DMV registration hold, and non-compliant trucks can be cited and penalized by CARB. Get tested as soon as possible: we can often schedule a mobile test quickly.

Our service

Can Clean Truck Check be done at my yard?

Yes. Diesel Dynamix is a mobile testing service. We come to your yard, jobsite, terminal or parking location anywhere in Southern California, so you never drive to a test center.

How long does a test take?

An OBD test is typically quick once we are connected to the truck. Smoke opacity tests take longer because the engine must be warmed up. For fleets, we plan the visit so trucks rotate through without holding up dispatch.

What do I need to have ready?

The truck’s VIN, access to the vehicle and keys, and a safe level place to park. For smoke opacity testing the engine should be able to reach normal operating temperature. We will confirm everything when we schedule.

What happens if my truck does not pass?

We explain the result and what it means in plain English. Your truck will need repairs to its emissions-control system before it can pass a retest. We can schedule the retest once repairs are done.

How do I pass the CARB smoke test?

Warm the engine to full operating temperature, fix exhaust leaks and engine faults, keep air filters and injectors in good shape, and make sure any diesel particulate filter is present and working. Well-maintained trucks usually pass.

Fleets

Can you test my whole fleet in one visit?

Yes. Tell us how many trucks you run and where they are parked. We schedule fleet visits to test as many trucks as possible per trip and can set up recurring testing so you never miss a deadline.

Clean Truck Check FAQ: start with two questions

Most Clean Truck Check questions come down to two facts about your vehicle: its GVWR and its fuel. If it is over 14,000 lb GVWR and runs on diesel or an alternative fuel, and it operates in California, it most likely needs Clean Truck Check. That holds whether it is registered in California, another state or another country.

Once you know a truck is covered, the engine model year decides the test:

  • 2013 and newer diesel, or 2018 and newer alternative fuel: CARB-verified OBD test
  • 2012 and older diesel without OBD: smoke opacity test plus visual inspection
  • 2017 and older alternative fuel without OBD: visual inspection

The answers below cover the questions we hear most from owner-operators and fleet managers. For edge cases, check CARB's rules for your vehicle. Still unsure? Send us the engine model year or VIN by text or WhatsApp at (858) 342-8328 and we will tell you which test applies.

Clean Truck Check help and customer service: who to contact

Clean Truck Check involves two groups, and knowing which one to contact saves time. CARB runs the program and the CTC-VIS system. A tester like Diesel Dynamix performs the test.

Contact CARB for: official rulings on whether a specific vehicle is exempt, account issues only CARB can fix, and questions about the compliance fee itself.

Contact us for:

  • Booking an on-site test anywhere in Southern California
  • Knowing which test your truck needs
  • Understanding a result in plain English
  • Help finding your way around CTC-VIS

Still unsure? Call or text (858) 342-8328 and we will help.

Is Clean Truck Check mandatory?

Yes, for covered vehicles. Most diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California must report in CTC-VIS, pay CARB's annual fee and pass periodic tests.

How do I know if my truck needs Clean Truck Check?

Check the GVWR and fuel type. If it is over 14,000 lb GVWR, runs on diesel or an alternative fuel and operates in California, it most likely needs Clean Truck Check; check CARB's rules for edge cases.

Do pickup trucks need Clean Truck Check?

Only if the pickup is over 14,000 lb GVWR and runs on diesel or an alternative fuel. Most everyday pickups are under that weight, but check the GVWR rating for your truck.

Do I need a smog check for my diesel truck in California?

If your diesel truck is over 14,000 lb GVWR, the emissions test you need is CARB's Clean Truck Check. A 2013 or newer engine gets an OBD test, and a 2012 or older engine without OBD gets a smoke opacity test and visual inspection.

Do semi trucks need smog check in California?

Yes. Semi trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California need Clean Truck Check testing, including out-of-state and international trucks.

Do box trucks need smog check in California?

Box trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR that run on diesel or an alternative fuel need Clean Truck Check. Lighter box trucks are below the program's weight threshold.

Do dump trucks need smog check?

Yes, dump trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California need Clean Truck Check. Older diesel dump trucks without OBD get a smoke opacity test and visual inspection.

Do motorhomes need smog check in California?

Diesel and alternative-fuel motorhomes over 14,000 lb GVWR can fall under Clean Truck Check. Check CARB's rules for your specific motorhome, and see our motorhome guide for details.

Is Clean Truck Check the same as smog check?

Not exactly. Many people call it a truck smog check, but Clean Truck Check is CARB's program for heavy vehicles over 14,000 lb GVWR, with its own tests and reporting in CTC-VIS.

What year trucks need Clean Truck Check?

Covered trucks of any model year need Clean Truck Check; the year decides the test. Newer engines get an OBD test, while older diesel engines without OBD get a smoke opacity test and visual inspection.

Can I do Clean Truck Check myself or buy my own OBD device?

Not with a regular scan tool, so a DIY Clean Truck Check is not an option. Clean Truck Check tests must be done by a credentialed tester using CARB-verified equipment, so check CARB's rules if you want to test your own trucks.

Does Clean Truck Check apply to trailers?

The test is done on the engine-powered vehicle, such as the tractor pulling the trailer. A trailer with no engine has nothing to test, but check CARB's rules for unusual equipment.

Is there a grace period for Clean Truck Check?

Do not count on one. Missing your deadline can lead to a DMV registration hold for California-registered vehicles and CARB citations and penalties, so test before the date shown in CTC-VIS.

How much do Clean Truck Check testers charge for one truck?

Testing fees are set by each tester. Our price depends on the number of trucks, the test type and your location, and we test single trucks as well as fleets; call or text (858) 342-8328 for a quote.
