Semi truck smog check in San Diego County, city by city
Short answer: A semi truck smog check in San Diego is CARB's Clean Truck Check, and Diesel Dynamix does it at your yard, jobsite or home. We test in Otay Mesa, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and the rest of San Diego County. Diesel trucks with 2013 and newer engines get an OBD test, and 2012 and older diesel trucks without OBD get a smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
What is a semi truck smog check in San Diego?
A semi truck smog check in San Diego is the CARB Clean Truck Check. It is not the BAR smog check that cars and light trucks get. The program covers most diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California.
That includes trucks registered in other states and in Mexico. In San Diego County, where many trucks cross the border every day, that point matters. A truck does not have to be California-registered to be covered. Our post on out-of-state trucks covers cross-border and out-of-state rules.
Each covered truck must be:
- Reported in CARB's CTC-VIS system.
- Paid up on CARB's annual compliance fee, shown in CTC-VIS.
- Tested by the deadline shown in CTC-VIS.
Most covered vehicles currently test twice a year. Under CARB's original rule, OBD-equipped vehicles move to four tests a year from October 1, 2027. A bill has proposed cutting testing to once a year, so check CTC-VIS for your own dates.
Which test will my San Diego truck get?
The test depends on engine model year and fuel:
- 2013 and newer diesel: CARB-verified OBD test.
- 2012 and older diesel without OBD: smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
- 2018 and newer alternative fuel: CARB-verified OBD test.
- 2017 and older alternative fuel without OBD: visual inspection.
Where do you do truck smog checks in San Diego County?
We drive to trucks across the county, from the border to North County and out to East County. The San Diego page has the full overview. Here is what testing looks like in the cities truckers ask about most.
Truck smog check in Otay Mesa
Otay Mesa is San Diego's main commercial border crossing area, with customs brokers, cross-dock warehouses and truck yards near SR-905 and SR-125. Many trucks there are Mexico-registered or work both sides of the border. We test tractors at the yard, so they do not lose time driving to a test site. Early-morning visits help fit testing in before crossings.
Truck smog check in Chula Vista
Chula Vista has a mix of industrial yards, contractors and owner-operators who park at home, plus trucks that serve the bayfront and the border. We test single trucks and small fleets at the yard or at home.
Truck smog check in El Cajon
El Cajon sits in East County on the 8. Many trucks there are construction, landscaping, aggregate and towing vehicles. We test at jobsites as well as yards. Older dump trucks and work trucks often need the smoke opacity test, and we bring that equipment along.
Truck smog check in Escondido
Escondido is the hub of inland North County, on the 15 and SR-78. It has agricultural haulers, nurseries, building suppliers and local delivery fleets. Agricultural trucks over 14,000 lb can fall under the program, so check CARB's rules for your vehicle if you are unsure.
Truck smog check in Oceanside
Oceanside sits on the coast at the north end of the county, along the 5 and SR-76. Trucks there include construction, delivery and service fleets, plus diesel motorhomes over 14,000 lb that may fall under the program. See Clean Truck Check for motorhomes.
Other San Diego County areas
We also test in National City, Kearny Mesa, Miramar, Santee, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, Carlsbad and Otay Ranch. If you run trucks out east toward the Imperial Valley, our El Centro page covers Calexico, Brawley and the rest of that area.
Why use a mobile tester in San Diego?
A mobile tester saves a trip. San Diego County is spread out, and driving a tractor from Oceanside or El Cajon to a test site and back costs fuel and hours.
With mobile testing:
- We come to the yard, jobsite, terminal or home.
- Several trucks can be tested in one visit.
- Early-morning visits are available.
- You get results in plain English and a next due date per truck.
How do I prepare for a semi truck smog check?
Report the truck in CTC-VIS and pay CARB's fee before the test. The CTC-VIS registration guide shows how. Then:
- Have keys, cab access and a contact person ready.
- Have the VIN handy. A VIN that does not match CTC-VIS causes problems.
- Fix any check engine light first. A lit MIL fails the OBD test.
- Warm up older engines before a smoke opacity test.
What happens if my truck does not pass?
A truck that fails needs repair and then a retest. Common causes are a check engine light, readiness monitors not set, DPF or emissions faults, and tampered or deleted equipment.
We do not repair trucks. We explain the result so your shop knows what to look at. Deleted or tampered emissions systems fail and are illegal. See what to do after a failed Clean Truck Check.
For California-registered trucks, missing a deadline can bring a DMV registration hold. CARB can also issue citations and penalties.
