Box truck and medium-duty Clean Truck Check guide
Short answer: Clean Truck Check for medium-duty trucks comes down to two facts: whether the vehicle is diesel or alternative fuel, and whether its GVWR is over 14,000 lb. Box trucks, Class 4 trucks, flatbeds, dump trucks and school buses over that line that operate in California are generally covered, so check CARB's rules for your vehicle. The test type depends on the engine model year, not the brand or body.
Do medium-duty trucks need Clean Truck Check?
Many do. The program covers most diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles over 14,000 lb GVWR that operate in California. A medium-duty truck that is over the weight line is in the program the same as a Class 8 tractor.
The number that matters is the gross vehicle weight rating, not what the truck weighs empty or loaded today. You find it on the label in the driver's door jamb. If the GVWR is 14,000 lb or less, the truck is under the line. If it is above, it is likely covered.
That is why two trucks that look alike can get different answers. Two box trucks with the same cab and body may be built on chassis with different ratings. Our vehicle type guide covers more vehicle types.
Do Class 4 trucks need Clean Truck Check?
Class 4 trucks are rated from 14,001 to 16,000 lb GVWR, so a diesel or alternative-fuel Class 4 truck is over the 14,000 lb line. That generally puts it in Clean Truck Check if it operates in California. Class 5, 6 and 7 trucks are heavier still.
Class 3 trucks top out at 14,000 lb, so they sit at or under the line. Many one-ton pickups and some cab-overs fall there. Our pickup guide covers that side of the line.
Do not go by the class name alone. Go by the GVWR printed on the door label of your truck.
Isuzu box truck smog check in California
An Isuzu box truck needs a Clean Truck Check if it is diesel or alternative fuel and its GVWR is over 14,000 lb. Isuzu cab-over box trucks come in different weight ratings, so the same model name can land on either side of the line depending on the build.
If your Isuzu box truck is covered:
- 2013 and newer diesel engine: it gets the CARB-verified OBD test.
- 2012 and older diesel without OBD: it gets the smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
What about the Isuzu OBD test?
An Isuzu OBD test works like any other CARB OBD test. The tester connects to the diagnostic port, reads the emissions data and submits it to CARB. What decides the test is the engine model year, not the brand. Our post on OBD tests by truck brand explains more.
If your Isuzu runs on gasoline, the rules are different. The program covers diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles, so check CARB's rules for your vehicle.
Hino OBD test and Hino box trucks
A Hino box truck follows the same logic. If it is diesel or alternative fuel, over 14,000 lb GVWR and operating in California, it is generally covered. Hino 2013 and newer diesel engines get the CARB-verified OBD test, and older Hino diesels without OBD get the smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
Before a Hino OBD test, make sure the check engine light is off and the truck has been driven normally. A lit MIL or readiness monitors that are not set will fail the OBD test. See readiness monitors and the check engine light.
Flatbed truck emissions test
A flatbed truck emissions test follows the same rules as a box truck. The body does not matter; the chassis rating and the fuel do.
Stake beds, landscape trucks and medium-duty flatbeds on Class 4 to Class 7 chassis are usually over 14,000 lb. Light flatbeds on smaller chassis may be under the line, so check the door label.
Dump truck smog check in California
Most dump trucks are well over 14,000 lb GVWR, so a dump truck smog check in California is usually a Clean Truck Check. Construction fleets often run a mix of older and newer dump trucks, so one yard may need both test types.
Older dump trucks with 2012 and older diesel engines and no OBD get the smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection. Newer ones get the OBD test. We test at jobsites as well as yards, so trucks stay on the job.
School bus smoke test in California
School buses over 14,000 lb GVWR are part of the program where they fall under it, so check CARB's rules for your buses. The test follows the engine model year:
- 2012 and older diesel without OBD: school bus smoke test, meaning a smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
- 2013 and newer diesel: OBD test.
- Alternative-fuel buses: OBD test for 2018 and newer, visual inspection for 2017 and older without OBD.
Bus yards often park many buses in one place, which makes a one-visit fleet test practical. Early-morning visits are available.
How often do medium-duty trucks test?
Medium-duty trucks follow the same schedule as heavy trucks. Most covered vehicles currently test twice a year. Under CARB's original rule, OBD-equipped vehicles move to four tests a year from October 1, 2027. A bill has proposed cutting testing to once a year, so it may change.
Each truck must also be reported in CTC-VIS with CARB's annual compliance fee paid. Your deadlines are in CTC-VIS. See the CTC-VIS registration guide if you have not set up an account.
What if a medium-duty truck fails?
A failed truck needs repair and then a retest. Common causes are a check engine light, readiness monitors not set, DPF or emissions faults, and tampered or deleted equipment. We do not do repairs; we explain the result so your shop knows where to start. Deleted systems fail and are illegal. See failed Clean Truck Check: what to do.
How Diesel Dynamix helps
Diesel Dynamix is an independent mobile testing service, not CARB or a government agency. For box trucks, flatbeds, dump trucks, school buses and other medium-duty vehicles in Southern California, we:
- Test at your yard, jobsite, bus yard or home.
- Help you confirm GVWR and which test applies.
- Run OBD tests, smoke opacity tests and visual inspections.
- Give each truck's next due date and send reminders.
- Keep records per truck and VIN for fleet testing.
We cover Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, San Diego and more. Call or text (858) 342-8328, use WhatsApp, or book online.

Do Class 4 trucks need Clean Truck Check?
Class 4 trucks are rated from 14,001 to 16,000 lb GVWR, so diesel and alternative-fuel Class 4 trucks that operate in California are generally covered. Check the GVWR on your door label and CARB's rules for your vehicle.
Does a Hino box truck get an OBD test or a smoke test?
A Hino with a 2013 or newer diesel engine gets a CARB-verified OBD test. An older Hino diesel without OBD gets a smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
Is the Isuzu OBD test different from other truck brands?
No. The CARB OBD test is decided by engine model year, not brand, so an Isuzu goes through the same OBD test as other covered trucks.
Does a flatbed truck need an emissions test in California?
A diesel or alternative-fuel flatbed over 14,000 lb GVWR that operates in California generally needs Clean Truck Check. The body type does not change the rule.
What test does an older school bus get in California?
A school bus with a 2012 or older diesel engine and no OBD gets a smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection.
