Mobile Truck Smog Check in Southern California

Mobile truck smog check in Southern California: we bring CARB Clean Truck Check testing to your yard, jobsite or port. See how it works and book.

Short answer: a mobile truck smog check means a Clean Truck Check tester drives to your truck instead of you driving to a test site. Diesel Dynamix brings CARB-verified OBD testing and smoke opacity testing to yards, jobsites, terminals, ports and homes across Southern California, from Los Angeles and Long Beach to the Inland Empire, San Diego and El Centro.

What is a mobile smog check for trucks?

It is the same Clean Truck Check test, done where the truck already sits. Drivers often call it a "truck smog check" or "diesel smog check," but for trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR the program is CARB's Clean Truck Check, also called the heavy-duty inspection and maintenance (HD I/M) program. Our Clean Truck Check vs smog check guide explains the difference.

A mobile tester brings the equipment to you. You do not take a truck off a route to sit in line, and you do not burn fuel and driver hours on a trip across town.

Which test will a mobile tester run on my truck?

The test depends on the engine, not on where it happens:

  • 2013 and newer diesel engines: a CARB-verified OBD test. See OBD testing.
  • 2012 and older diesel engines without OBD: a smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection. See smoke opacity testing.
  • 2018 and newer alternative-fuel engines: a CARB-verified OBD test.
  • 2017 and older alternative-fuel engines without OBD: a visual inspection.

So whether you search for mobile diesel emissions testing, a mobile semi truck smog check or a mobile smoke test in California, you get the same program test. We run all of these on site.

Where can I get truck emissions testing near me?

If your truck is in Southern California, the test can come to you. We drive to:

The full list is on our service areas page. If your town is not listed but is inside these counties, call and ask.

Where can I park the truck for the test?

Anywhere the truck can sit safely and run. Common spots include:

  • A company yard or terminal
  • A construction jobsite or quarry
  • A warehouse dock or distribution center lot
  • A port-area container yard
  • The street or driveway at home, for owner-operators who park their rig there

Mobile vs shop: what is different?

The test is the same. What changes is your time. With a shop, someone has to drive the truck there, wait and drive back. With mobile testing, the truck stays put and keeps working around the visit. For a fleet, one visit can cover many trucks in a row.

We also offer early-morning visits, so a truck can be tested before it leaves for the day. If you need a different time, ask when you call.

How do I get ready for a mobile Clean Truck Check?

A little prep keeps the visit short:

  1. Check your deadline. Log in to CARB's CTC-VIS system and confirm when each truck is due. Our CTC-VIS registration guide walks through it.
  2. Have the VIN and plate ready. We record results per truck and VIN.
  3. Look at the dash. A check engine light (MIL) or emissions fault can cause an OBD test to fail. See readiness monitors and the check engine light.
  4. Make the OBD port reachable. Clear anything blocking the diagnostic connector.
  5. For smoke tests, plan on warm-up. Older diesels should be at operating temperature. Our smoke test tips cover the basics.

What happens after the mobile test?

We explain the result in plain English and give you the next due date. If the truck passes, you are set until the next window. If it fails, the truck needs repair and then a retest. We do not do repairs, but we tell you what the test showed so your mechanic knows where to start. See failed Clean Truck Check: what to do.

Remember that the testing fee is separate from CARB's annual compliance fee, which owners pay in CTC-VIS. Our compliance fee guide explains it.

How do I find a Clean Truck Check tester near me in Southern California?

You do not need to find a test site. Diesel Dynamix drives to your truck in Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, San Diego and the Imperial Valley. Book online or call or text (858) 342-8328.

Can a mobile tester do both the OBD test and the smoke opacity test?

Yes. We run CARB-verified OBD tests on 2013 and newer diesel engines and smoke opacity tests with a visual inspection on 2012 and older diesel engines, all on site.

Is a mobile semi truck smog check the same as Clean Truck Check?

Yes. For trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR, what drivers call a truck smog check is CARB's Clean Truck Check test. Mobile testing is the same test, done where your truck is parked.

Can you test my truck early in the morning before it leaves the yard?

Yes. We offer early-morning visits so trucks can be tested before they head out. Call or text to set a time that works for your schedule.

What should I have ready when the mobile tester arrives?

Have the truck parked where it can run safely, the VIN and plate handy, and the OBD port easy to reach. Older diesels for a smoke test should be warmed up.
